Senate Republicans to Push for a Clean, Bipartisan LNG Bill

JUNEAU – Today, the Senate passed HB 381, a bill that was supposed to encourage the construction of the AK LNG Project, in a vote of 12 to 8.

Our Senators were disappointed to vote against this bill. The Senate Republican Caucus whole-heartedly wants to see this project built, however, the Democrat-lead Majority Caucus chose to sabotage a solid, bipartisan bill with stipulations that not only kill the AKLNG project, but will affect businesses, communities, families, and nearly every Alaskan.

Some of these policy proposals include:

  1. New Taxes Targeting S Corporations: Not only would this increase the cost of the AK LNG Project, but it would also place excess taxes on oil and gas businesses. Targeted taxes on the very companies keeping the lights on and the heat running is, quite simply, economically ineffective. The people of Alaska cannot receive the maximum benefit of resources that remain stranded in the ground.

  2. Project Timeline Requirements: Even the most perfect plan goes awry. While the developer, Glenfarne, has made thorough plans to have the project built as rapidly as possible, the Democrat-led Majority linked tax relief to strict building schedules with no leeway for potential supply chain delays, unforeseeable world events, or other potential – and unavoidable – obstructions. Investors will not finance a project facing a tax structure dependent on events beyond the developer’s control.

  3. Project Labor Agreements: Glenfarne signed precedent-setting agreement with local labor unions with the goal of employing as many Alaskan workers as possible. PLA’s are a great tool to ensure both industry and workers benefit from a project, however, the Democrat-lead Majority took advantage of the political process and altered a pre-existing agreement, increasing the potential for a labor shortage, delays and uncertainty.

Alaska is facing a gas shortage crisis. A failure to supply gas to the Railbelt will negatively impact families, communities, and businesses with higher costs and constant uncertainty on whether their lights and heat will stay on.

We can reverse course.

The AK LNG Project is a once in a generation opportunity for every single Alaskan.

Tomorrow, on the first day of the third special session, let us work together to craft a clean LNG bill that allows the pipeline project to move forward. The Senate Republican Caucus will continue to champion the most important contributors to the AK LNG Project – Alaskans.
